Most models hate competition, and that has
affected the growth of the industry which is almost at a spot over the years. A
lot of models dislike pageant for one reason or the other. The most popular
opinion is about favoritism. But then it is almost a natural occurrence even in
families where parents could have a favorite child. Different factors determine
who the favorite become. Sometimes the favorite is not the best but the
sensitive, the loyal, and importantly the manageable which is similar to being
loyal.
Although favoritism is quite controversial, it
could also be a case of defending an interest. However, this should not be a
reason to avoid competition like most models do. Competition gives more than a
stipulated prize. It simply places value and beauty to a career, providing more
reasons to be the best.
Competition provides a chance to understand
the diversity in human power over one another, and how it can be maneuvered
with individual uniqueness. It is a time of learning and self improvement.
Aside Pageantry, there seems to be very few
major competitions for models. Models are all out for brands in fashion shows,
commercials, activation, ushering and other service rendering activities. These
puts some cash in their pockets for personal needs but never build on their
personalities. Talking about being rich and famous from being a model, they are
but few. The bottom line is that these few like Agbani Derego, former miss
world, Oluchi, a brand ambassador, Bryan, former Mr. Nigeria, were made by
competitions, and have built themselves into a brand which other brands demand
to associate with.
Needless to overemphasis the need for more
competitive activities for models. The only way to avoid competition is to
carve a niche for self through personal skill like Harrison Chinedu, the
Nigeria Guinness World Record breaker for the farthest distance travel with the
ball balanced on the head. The journey is as personal and as difficult as that,
yet the drive is the ride to a place of honor.
This is why Brands associates with Brands.
This is why the celebrities are the ambassadors for big brands while career
models are left out in their comfort zones which is none-competitive; that is
the fashion shows, activation, event ushering, etc. Here they barely invest
physical cash and energy, but are simply contented with the token pay for such
services.
We at MCN believe that Models are Brand
Ambassadors. We believe in the industry and wish to contribute our quota to it
building. This is the essence of MODELS CONNECT INDUSTRY NIGHT; MCIN where
models are celebrated like stars while sharing opportunities.
